Mr Fairbank told me in my follow up letter to loose weight to stop my knee pain. He never weighed me or measured my height (I've checked with my GP and he says this advice is rubbish) or mentioned this in his consultation with me. I had also explained how i couldn't excercise due to the knee pain so is he expecting me to starve myself to loose weight?? I still have a lot of pain in my knee but won't be going back to see him!

Response from Mr Adrian Fairbank

Dear Sir or Madam Thank you very much for your feedback via the IWGC website. It is really helpful to have comments put through even of a negative nature as it allows us to think carefully and evaluate our consultation and our practise. IWGC naturally by its nature doesn’t allow us to identify you and if you did wish me to comment specifically with regard to your situation, I would very happily do so if you contact me through the info@wimbledonclinics.co.uk email address. It really didn’t sound from the description that I wasn’t very helpful to you at all and I obviously greatly apologise for this. It is always our intention to go to work to help people. Quite a lot of knee pain is caused by impact – shock absorbing heels on shoes, for example, making a big difference compared to hard heeled shoes and in the way in which the knee works the forces inside the knee are massively magnified by the load put upon them. It is of interest that the load or force behind the knee cap in getting out of a chair without using arms to push up can be as much as 5 or even 7 times body weight. You also are correct in that a normal body mass index as determined by a height and weight (which one can check on line via the BMI calculator website) is a good indication as to whether benefit from weight reduction can be gained. A raised BMI for the reasons above increasing the forces upon the knee and as a result the loads and the subsequent pain from a knee. I hope that these comments are useful and once again would like to thank you for your feedback – it can only help in modifying our practice for the better. Best wishes Yours sincerely Mr Adrian C Fairbank FRCS (Orth)

I visited Mr. Fairbanks who had been highly recommended, after a skiing injury to my knee. An MRI scan had already been carried out, so he had all the details required. He suggested an arthroscopy on my knee which was carried out within 2 weeks of my initial consultation. A follow up appointment was made for 2 weeks later and all seemed to have gone well. Hopefully with the help of an excellent physio and daily visits to the gym, I shall be back on the tennis court in 3 months time. Next year if I wish to ski, a knee brace was recommended.

Recommends excellent people to address issues that do not need surgery.

Adrian was extensive in his questioning of my symptoms which resulted in a thorough mri scan and a subsequent referal to a specialist physiotherapist. This process has menat that excercise will avoid unnecessary surgery

This was the first time I had been seen by Mr Fairbank. His approach to my knee problem was most reassuring and his follow-up after my MRI scans was excellent.
